Hey there, fellow car enthusiasts! Welcome to STACKS fS, I’m Fred, your resident car guru, and today, I’ll be sharing my comprehensive review on a gem of an SUV – the captivating BMW E70 X5 48i V8. The BMW X5 has built quite the reputation globally being one of the first true ‘on-road’ ‘off-roaders’ and is a true monarch of the SUV world. We’re not here to review BMW’s off road capabilities, who buys an X5 for that?!
This blog is ideal for anyone considering buying an X5 or simply curious about what it’s like to drive and own one. I must confess, I’m a bit of a BMW enthusiast myself, so a fair warning – there might be a wee bit of bias in this review.
The BMW X5 E70 M Sport is an impressive package that seamlessly merges comfort, luxury, and performance. But is it worth it? Let’s delve into this car review.
Why Choose the BMW X5 e70 V8?
Here’s why I bought it – it’s a V8, first and foremost. It’s also comfortable, spacious enough for the family, and brilliant for those weekend getaways. The driving position? Love it! I bought the X5 as a solid compromise of performance, engine sound, carrying capability, cruising capability and driver comfort!
What does a BMW V8 Engine Sound Like?
Powering the X5 is a 4.8-liter V8 petrol engine, which boasts a robust 350bhp output and allows the SUV to zoom from 0-60 mph in a mere 6.3 seconds. The driving experience is nothing short of enthralling; with its full-throttle growl, you’d barely believe you’re in a hefty SUV. It’s no sports car, and you definitely know you are driving a relatively large car. The sound of the V8 is not overly loud, but it has a lovely refined rumble that’s characteristic of a V8. If anything, I am tempted to modify the exhaust to allow a bit more of that V8 grumble out (did it with the same engine in a 650i, and wow what a sound it can make!)
What is the fuel consumption on an X5 petrol V8?
The 4.8-litre V8 engine in this beast is smooth as silk. But let’s address the elephant in the room – fuel consumption. With a V8 power unit and being a heavy SUV, it’s not going to be light on fuel. But if you ask me, the 17-18 miles per gallon I get is a decent trade-off for the luxury and power it provides. The V8 X5 will do 25mpg to 30mpg on a long run and around 13mpg to 15mpg around town.
What is the E70 X5 like to drive?
Push down the pedal in a BMW X5 e70 V8, and the roar of the engine is something to really enjoy. The X5 is not a small vehicle, and you won’t be fooled into thinking it is, but the BMW can make a great off the line launch and the combination of gearbox and engine power are well suited to each other. The V8 has a nice rumble, although I’d like it a little louder sometimes (but not too much).
Does the BMW X5 have good handling with adaptive suspension?
Even for a lofty beast like this, the handling is superb – much better than I’d have imagined. With the adaptive suspension, it corners like a dream, reminding me of something much lower to the ground. It’s more comfortable to drive than you’d expect and the brakes? Just phenomenal.
Is a BMW X5 E70 Good Value for Money?
You can snap up this beauty for a mere 8-12 grand (sterling) in the petrol V8, a lot less for a diesel, with something like 70-80,000 miles on the clock. With features like a panoramic sunroof, soft leather interiors, full air conditioning, head-up display, and rear entertainment for the kiddies, the value it offers is undeniable. Compare that to new prices hovering around an eye watering £100k, it is hard to understand why you would!
What are the worst things about a BMW X5?
The E70 generation of BMW X5 is considered robust and solid, however, it’s not all roses. The more remote plastics are a bit on the cheap side and tend to creak. The climate control system is, honestly, overly complicated and very fiddly. It’s an iDrive menu of mazes that tries to be too clever for its own good.
What Are the Best Features of the BMW X5 V8?
The V8 engine sound is top-notch. The panoramic sunroof, surprisingly, doesn’t add much noise, even at 70 mph. The rear has a split tailgate, useful in tight car parks. But above all, it’s the overall comfort level in the X5 that has me happily climbing in over and over again.
Should You Buy a BMW X5?”
Yes if you are after engine sound, comfort, handling and space, no if you are obsessed with fuel consumption and you’d rather spend your money on a newer car depreciating faster than this V8 can drink fuel. The mix of speed, handling, and comfort is pretty much unrivalled. It accelerates quickly and handles corners better than any SUV has a right to. It’s a joy to drive, and I’d heartily recommend it to anyone looking for a high-end, high-performance SUV.
What’s the “Final Word” on the BMW X5 E70 V8?
All in all, the BMW X5 E70 48i V8 is a solid choice for anyone looking for a mix of power, handling, and comfort. It’s a true all-rounder, offering a driving experience that few SUVs of this size can match. Whether it’s the power-packed V8, the luxurious interiors, or the overall solid build, the X5 ticks all the right boxes. Sure, there might be a few drawbacks here and there, but they are minor, and easily overshadowed by the many virtues of this beast. So, if you’re in the market for a sizeable SUV, the BMW X5 is well worth a look.
